Holy Family Catholic Academy

Holy Family is a consolidation of two elementary schools: Our Lady of Victories, Harrington Park, established in 1959, and Immaculate Conception Norwood, established in 1961. The school building in Norwood was chosen to be the site of Holy Family that opened as the new inter-parochial school in September 1991.

Norwood History

Before European settlement of the area, The Lenni Lenape Native Americans lived in the area that would become Norwood. European settlers first moved to the area in 1670 about a dozen Dutch families. Also during that time, a land grant was given by Philip Carteret, Governor of the Province of East Jersey, for King Charles II of England.

“Norwood” comes from this area’s original description, “North-Woods.” This area was once part of Harrington Township, which was formed in 1775 from the northernmost portions of both Hackensack Township and New Barbadoes Township.

In 1840, Harrington Township was whittled down by the creation of Washington Township from lands west of the Hackensack River. What was left of Harringtown Township formed a five-mile square piece of land. This square was bounded on the north by Rockland County, New York; east by the Hudson River, south by Hackensack Township and west by the Hackensack River. Norwood was a part of Harrington Township at this point, along with Northvale, Old Tappan, Demarest, Closter and Harrington Park.

In 1905, Norwood formally seceded from Harrington Township to become the Borough of Norwood.

Norwood Parks & Recreation

The Borough of Norwood maintains a Parks and Recreation system to enhance to the quality of life for its residents. Recreational facilities include 3 local parks, 3 athletic fields, a swimming pool and an ice skating rink. Children and youth can take part in Little League, football, soccer, softball and basketball. The Norwood Swim Club is available to members only.
